“Nestor, why does this creature hate me so much? Why does she hate my blood?”
Minerva Herrera, a young Colombian woman and devout Catholic, is the love of Nestor McCorley’s life. And although twelve years of parochial school have left Nestor with mixed feelings about God and the Church, he and Minerva marry after a brief courtship. She quickly becomes pregnant and the couple enjoy a happy domestic life. But in the late stages of her pregnancy, as Minerva is lighting a candle to the Blessed Virgin, she is confronted in the church by a frightening woman who hurls a shocking curse at her and her unborn child.
In the weeks following the incident, ominous things begin to happen. With his marriage on the rocks and his wife’s health at risk, Nestor begins to search for answers.
Who is this woman? Is someone seeking revenge for something in Nestor’s past? Is Minerva’s former lover trying to get her back? Nestor enlists the help of a priest as he revisits his Catholic grammar school and combs the city for answers. Everyone he meets becomes a suspect as Nestor’s life begins to unravel, and his worst nightmares become real.

This one starts off slow and picks up pace, especially toward the conclusion. If you enjoy literary references you will enjoy this book; there are enough to stock a library of classics. Negative references to the Catholic Church are also peppered throughout the novel. In my youth disobedient children who lied often received a dash of pepper in their mouths, leaving them with a distaste for a fallacious lifestyle. Reading this book could have the same effect on a reader’s desire to taste Catholicism, which makes me sad. The mysterious storyline kept my attention, but I wanted to know more about the characters other than Nester (who I had a hard time liking.)Product details

The Witch at Rivermouth eBook Stephen P O'Connor EmilieNoelle Provost Reviews
Suspense from beginning to end, with Irish humor to make one smile and then again, sadness to make one cry. Interesting study of cultural differences and the ways in which the characters in this novel cope. Loved it! It's a book I could easily read again!
First time I have read anything by this author, loved the book. I grew up in Lowell and was familiar with areas he spoke of, did bring back some fun memories. I plan on reading it again. Look forward to his next book.
An excellent read full of suspense and surprises. I read a ton of mysteries and it is great to find one where the characters have depth and realism. Great insight into Lowell MA bringing the city and its cultural diversity to life. I loved the frequent use of literary and musical references. Just an overall fine reason experience.
One of the most thought-provoking questions raised by "The Witch at Rivermouth" is whether it's enough to just try and be a decent person, while not being of faith, or to live one's life blindly adhering to the doctrines, traditions and mythos of an organized religion. It's pleasurable to read a story that makes you think AND entertains.
Wonderful read! I could not put it down, what mystery and intrigue woven with a story of love, life, joy and sadness all combined to hold your attention on every page. O'Connor has such a command of language that you can picture every scene so vibrantly. Just as you think you have it figured out, a new twist puts your theory in doubt. I loved it. I've read his previous novel, The Spy in the City of Books, and he is a terrific writer.
I read Stephen O'Connor's first novel Spy In The City of Books and loved it. I have been looking forward to The Witch at Rivermouth and was not disappointed. The story captivated me from the first page. I became invested in each character as the story unfolded. O'Connor's background knowledge greatly enriched this captivating mystery.
Just as I thought I had solved the mystery I turned the page to find out I had more work to do.
The conflict between faith and witchcraft propelled the story forward toward an intriguing ending.
Local author from my city. Great ,well written story! Keeps you guessing. Strongly recommend his other books too!!
